Dr Vivek Sukumar completed his MCh in Surgical Oncology at the Tata Memorial Hospital, Mumbai, following which he did a Fellowship in GI and Peritoneal Surface Oncology. He completed his Fellowship in HPB Surgery as well as Fellowship in HPB Oncology from Korea. under the mentorship of Prof Choi at the Severance Hospital, Yonsei University, South Korea.
He has trained extensively in minimally invasive laparoscopic and robotic surgeries and has received multiple international awards for innovative and challenging procedures, including the best video award at the KSELS 2021 conference. He has more than 30 international publications in PubMed-indexed journals.
He has a particular interest in sphincter-saving surgeries (ISR), extended resections, and exenteration for locally advanced rectal cancers. His expertise also includes robotic surgery, cytoreduction and HIPEC for GI and gynaecological oncology, as well as robotic HPB surgery.
Besides treating colorectal cancers, he performs minimally invasive surgery for endometrial cancer and cytoreductive surgery for ovarian cancer and peritoneal metastases. He is an active member of several surgical societies such as the Indian Association of Surgical Oncology, The Association of Colo-Rectal surgeons of India, the Association of Minimal Access Surgeons of India and the Society of Peritoneal Surface Oncology. He is also a member of International organisations such as the European Society of Coloproctology and the Association of Coloproctology of Great Britain and Ireland.

He has been part of many International Research projects such as CORSICA, MRC-Add aspirin colorectal cohort and the PelvEX collaborative group. EFFIPEC Trial, MIS-CYTO Trial, TORPEDO Trial and part of the authors to develop the LYON Consensus for Cytoreductive surgery.
